Since the invention of the automatic transmission, they have just become more and more technical and complicated. Your transmission can have over 1,000 different parts in it::gearbox, shaft, hydraulics, valves, gearsets, flywheel, bearings, and other components.

You may have noticed that more and more of today's cars are equipped with new tiptronic transmissions. These are transmissions that allows the driver to override the automatic system. With complicated machinery like this, you must be sure your transmission is in good working condition.

To be sure of this, here are some tips that will aid you in maintaining your new or rebuilt transmission:

Check transmission fluid regularly

Check your fluids at least twice a year. But, each car is different. So see your owner's manual for details.

Have your transmission fluid flushed and changed

Again, each car is different. Refer to owner's manual for factory recommendations on what type of fluid and how often it should be change. A general rule is, the more load you put on your transmission, the more it's going to need to be changed. Most manufacturers recommend 30,000 miles for automatic transmissions. So, if you use your vehicle for towing, uphill driving, or heavy stop and go situations then you'll probably need your transmission fluids flushed and changed. Have problems diagnosed quickly

Once you notice you transmission is having issues you need to get it diagnosed by a professional quickly. The sooner you get it fixed, the less likely you'll pay a lot of money. Common warning signs:

  • Transmission does not shift into gear
  • Delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse
  • Transmission slips and engine revs, but torque is low and car's speed and acceleration are sluggish

  • Strange noises of any kind
  • Discolored and dark transmission fluid
