I
want to buy a used car. How do I check the transmission to see if it's
good?
Always ask the dealer
or seller what work has been done. If the transmission has been rebuilt
you most likely shouldn’t buy the car. Before test driving it, shift
through all the gears (with your foot on the brake) and make sure there
is no slippage or jerking. If it takes more than a second for the gear
to engage, the transmission is probably worn and not good. If testing a
manual transmission, shift into neutral and put on the parking brake.
Idle the engine and press the clutch pedal. Listen for noises, then
release it and make sure there are no noises.
